VCOM certificated graduates possess the conceptual and technical skills necessary to handle advanced-level design problems. Both print and multimedia certificates programs require at least one full semester of internship work, although many VCOM students do more. Prior to the internship, all intermediate- and advanced-level VCOM courses (56-63 IN and 65 IN) include at least one real-world client experience for all students contracted through the LPC Design Shop, a business run for and by the VCOM student program.
When presented with real world projects and clients, VCOM students further develop research and analytical skills, broaden their awareness of design aesthetics, develop business judgment, and hone communication skills while collaborating with their peers, instructors and mentors.
VCOM interns, working both off- and on-campus, experience a wide variety of real-world situations such as: participating in client presentations and peer brainstorming sessions; working in cross-discipline teams; working directly with a variety of clients and client needs; learning how to determine and meet deadlines while keeping within the restrictions of a budget.
AA-bound and skills development students may request consideration to undertake Design Shop work if they have mastered design and technical skills adequate to the task.
